Bah! Humbug!

Bah! Humbug! (video 326).

Hello everybody! Welcome back to E³ (E-cubed).  Today I have an expression. This is actually a really old expression. But if you go to America and I believe if you go to the UK and Australia, people will know this expression, because it comes from old English. But it’s popular in a very famous Christmas movie called the Scrooge. Actually there are very many names, but the character the Scrooge makes this line famous and it is Bah! Humbug! Bah! Humbug! It’s actually two separated words with their own exclamation points. Bah! Bah just means blah. Humbug! Humbug means nonsense, ridiculous, a waste of time. Bah! Humbug! And we say them together. We should say it like the Scrooge did in the movie. I think another name for the movie is A Christmas Carol, ah, something like that. But, if you’ve heard up the Scrooge, yeah, he’s very famous, he’s very mean, but the movie is really nice. The Scrooge. When I was young, actually the movie it’s a little bit scary, but it always ends nicely. So the idea in the movie it’s Christmas’ time and when people see Scrooge, they say: Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas! And he hears Merry Christmas, Bah! Humbug! Christmas is not sense, there is no such thing as Christmas. There’s no Santa Claus, there’s no holiday. It’s a waste of time. Bah! Humbug! Of course, the people who hear that, they feel sorry and they feel sad for scrooge, ‘cause they have the Christmas spirit. This feeling of family, and sharing, and giving, but the scrooge is very greedy. He doesn’t like to share. He doesn’t have family. Bah! Humbug! Let’s check out the dialogue:

Bah! Humbug!

Oh, come on! Santa won’t like that.

Bah! Humbug! There is not Santa.

Mas é popular em um filme muito famoso de Natal chamado Scrooge. Na verdade, existem muitos nomes, mas o personagem Scrooge tornou esta expressão famosa e é Bah! Humbug! (Dane-se!) Bah! Humbug! (Dane-se!) Realmente são duas palavras separadas com seus próprios pontos de exclamação. Bah! Bah significa apenas blá. Humbug! (Dane-se!) Humbug significa absurdo, ridículo, um desperdício de tempo.
