Hello everybody! Welcome back to E³ (E-cubed). Today we have a very friendly expression. This is an expression we use among friends or enemies, not at work. We could use at work but be careful. It’s a very casual expression. It can be nice, it can be mean. It is back at you! Back at you! Now, we say back at you and we can say back at you. Sorry for this messy chalkboard. So let me write down. So, back at you. We have the word “at you”. Okay? Now, first of all, in English we can say: you, yah, y’. We have three pronunciation: you, yah, y’, and then we have the t’. And we have a t + y, we can get a ch sound. So, we could say at you, at yah, at y’, at you, at yah, at y’, all of those are possible and we can say, stop sound, at you, at yah, at y’, and we can say at you, at yah, at y’, at y’. at y’ sounds weird. So this kind would be possible with the t’, but anyway, so many different pronunciation possibilities. There’s not just one style. Back at you, somebody might say that. Back at yah, somebody might say that. Back at y’, somebody might say that. All these pronunciations are possible. What does it mean? It means if you said something to me, and I feel the same way to you, I can say “back at yah”. So, if you say to me “Shane, Merry Christmas!” Back at yah. “Shane, you’re looking good!” Back at yah. “Shane, you’re so funny!” Back at yah. “You’re so funny too, you’re good looking too, you’re great!, Merry Christmas.” It’s a great expression. But it can also be “Shane, I hate you!” Back at you! “Shane, you’re stupid!” Back at you! It can be that way too. Okay? So, why back at you it’s like when you play tennis. “Shane, I hate you!” The tennis ball is coming. Back at you! I hit the tennis ball back to you. “Shane, I love you!” Back at you, I love you too.
