Hello everybody!

Welcome back to E³ (E-cubed).

Today we have a very useful expression, very common in America. I don’t know if it’s that common in the UK. It is right off the bat. Right off the bat. And this comes from baseball. So, you guys know American baseball. We have the bat, the baseball bat, right? And we hold here and we swing and we hit the ball into hopefully a home run. So this is a bat. Right off the bat means the ball. It’s the bat and soon it hits the bat and goes out and immediately you start running to first base. As soon as the ball, pow!, hits the bat and goes off the bat, immediately you start running to first base, maybe to second base, and third base and home. This expression, right off the bat, means immediately, without hesitation, without pause, pow!, go, right off the bat. So, I first came to Korea in 1986 and by February of 1987, pow!, I was teaching English to college students in Korea. Right off the bat, I came to Korea as a US soldier and right off the bat I started teaching English to Korean students. That’s when my career began. Right off the bat. Ah, when I was, ah, when I joined the military, I graduated high school and pow!, right off the bat, I went to the military. I didn’t spend my summer vacation having fun. I went to work. And when I left the military, pow!, I went to college. No vacation time. I went straight to the university and graduated. And, pow!, as soon as I graduated college, I went back to Korea to start teaching professionally. Right off the bat, immediately, right away. Great expression!

THE TEACHER GAVE US A TEST RIGHT OFF THE BAT.

Uh, that’s not easy, that’s right. Sometimes you join a class, it may be a college, a language institute, pow!, the teacher gives you a test. What the hell! That’s cool. Actually, I apologize  to some of the DDM students. We do dictation. There some dictation are not so difficult, but some are quite difficult. So, if you have been a DDM member for a long time, you know the level goes up and down, and up and down, but sometimes our new students will join and the first  assignment that they get is a really difficult one. Right off the bat I give them something almost impossible. They hate me, but I love them. And then they find out the next assignment is much easier. And their confidence grows and their listening improves and everything is really good. Right off the bat. Doing something immediately. Right off the bat. Can you make an example? Before you do, I want you to go to Google, google.com. And I want the search right off the bat and look at the different examples. Don’t go to the learning English websites. Go to the real American people using websites. The news, and the blogs, and see if you can find the expression right off the bat and how do Americans use it, and then I would like if you could make an example. And for you bloggers out there, put it in your blog, because you learn something, you write it down, and you explain it to other people you’re teaching. That’s one of the best ways to learn an English expression to learn English language, any language. Got it? Alright. See you tomorrow. Bye.

Hoje, temos uma expressão muito útil, muito comum nos Estados Unidos. Eu não sei se é tão comum no Reino Unido. É right off the ball (logo de cara). Logo de cara. E isso vem de baseball. Então, vocês conhecem baseball americano. Temos o taco, o taco de beisebol, certo? E nós seguramos aqui e giramos e batemos a bola, com sorte, um home run. Portanto, isso é um bastão. Logo de cara na bola. É o bastão e tão logo a bola bate no bastão e sai, você imediatamente começa a correr para a primeira base. Tão logo a bola, pow!, atinge o bastão e deixa o bastão, imediatamente você começa a correr para a primeira base, talvez a segunda base, e a terceira base e home. Esta expressão, logo de cara, significa imediatamente, sem hesitação, sem pausa, pow!, vai, logo de cara. Então, eu vim pela primeira vez para a Coréia em 1986 e em fevereiro de 1987, pow!, eu estava ensinando Inglês para estudantes universitários na Coréia. E quando saí do exército, pow!, eu fui para a faculdade. Sem período de férias. Fui direto para a universidade e me formei. E, pow!, tão logo me formei na faculdade, voltei para a Coréia para começar a ensinar profissionalmente. Logo de cara, de imediato, de imediato. Grande expressão!

Uh, isso não é fácil, com certeza. Às vezes você participa de uma aula, pode ser uma faculdade, um instituto de línguas, pow! o professor te dá um teste. Mas que diabos! Isso é legal. Na verdade, peço desculpas a alguns dos alunos DDM. Nós fazemos ditados. Existem alguns ditados que não são tão difíceis, mas alguns são muito difíceis. Então, se você tem sido um membro do DDM por um bom tempo, você sabe que o nível sobe e desce, sobe e desce, mas às vezes os nossos novos alunos irão se juntar a nós e o primeiro trabalho que eles recebem é muito difícil. Logo de cara eu lhes dou algo quase impossível. Eles me odeiam, mas eu os amo. E então eles descobrem que a próxima tarefa é muito mais fácil. E a confiança cresce e melhora a habilidade de ouvir e tudo é muito bom. Logo de cara. Fazer alguma coisa imediatamente. Logo de cara. Você pode dar um exemplo? Antes que você me dê um exemplo, eu quero que você vá ao Google, google.com. Eu quero que você pesquise logo de cara e olhe para os diferentes exemplos. Não vá para os sites de ensino de inglês. Vá para sites reais usadas pelos americanos. As notícias e os blogs, e veja se você pode encontrar a expressão right off the bat (logo de cara) e veja como os americanos a usam, e então eu gostaria que você desse um exemplo. E para vocês, blogueiros que estão por aí, coloque o exemplo no seu blog, porque você aprende alguma coisa, você toma notas, você explica para outras pessoas que você está ensinando.
